A LITTLE ABOUT BASSETS

It's easy to see how they steal our hearts with those long ears, sad, brown eyes, and huge paws.
Bassets were originally bred in France to be the perfect dog for rabbit hunting because their short legs made it easy for them to run through the bushy countryside. Their name is derived from the French word "bas" meaning low. The basset scent of smell and ability to "ground scent" is second only to the Bloodhound.
They are known for their gentle disposition, friendliness, and lazy demeanor, but they can also be bossy, demanding, and stubborn.
They absolutely love food! Bassets can have a stubborn streak, but since they are so food-motivated, they are best trained with patience and lots of treats.
The downside of owning a Basset is that they don't make good jogging companions ;)
On a positive note, they are quiet, calm and low-maintenance. They are happy letting small children climb on them and love to make friends with other pets!
Since Bassets are so low-key, they make a pleasant addition to many kinds of families. They can thrive on a farm or in a city apartment as long as they get the love and companionship they crave.
CARING FOR A BASSETOverall, Bassets are a low-maintenance pet, but here are a few helpful tips to keep a Basset healthy!
- They have long ears that need to be cleaned regularly. We recommend wiping them out with pet wipes or baby wipes.
- They have short hair that benefits from a daily brushing.
- They are known for their lazy demeanor, and even though they are happy to lay around all day, they must get daily exercise for their long-term health.
- Bassets are prone to pick up a scent and follow it wherever it may lead. To keep them safe, they need to be in an enclosure or safely on a leash during a walk.
- Because of their short legs, they aren't good swimmers. To keep them safe, keep them away from water.
- When they are little, they are prone to tripping over their long ears, so stairs can be a hazard.
